What Is a Cane Toad?

The Cane Toad (Rhinella marina), also known as the Bufo toad or Giant Toad, is a highly invasive species that has taken over South Florida. Originally introduced to combat agricultural pests, these large amphibians now thrive in suburban neighborhoods — and they're deadly to the pets we love.

Cane toads secrete a potent milky-white toxin from their parotoid glands, located behind their eyes. A single toad can kill a dog or cat within 15 minutes of exposure if left untreated. Do not wait — if your pet has mouthed a toad, act immediately.

📏
Large & Noticeable

Adults range 4–9 inches. Brown, warty skin. Triangular glands behind eyes.

🌧️
Most Active at Night

Peak activity occurs after rain, at dusk and dawn — when pets are often outside.

🥚
Rapid Reproducers

A single female lays up to 30,000 eggs per clutch — populations explode quickly.

🐍
No Natural Predators

Florida's wildlife has no natural defense against their toxin — populations go unchecked.

Signs of Toad Poisoning

If your pet mouthed or licked a cane toad, look for these symptoms and rinse their mouth immediately with water — then call your vet.

Excessive Drooling & FoamingOne of the first signs — triggered immediately upon contact with the toxin.
Red, Inflamed GumsThe toxin causes intense irritation to mucous membranes.
Disorientation & StumblingNeurological effects can set in rapidly — do not delay treatment.
SeizuresSevere envenomation can cause seizures and cardiac arrest in minutes.
VomitingThe body's attempt to expel the toxin. Get to a vet immediately.
Emergency: Rinse your pet's mouth with water for 10 minutes wiping forward, then call your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital immediately.

FAQ

Can't find your answer? Call us directly at 239-539-2228.

Yes — cane toads are one of the most dangerous wildlife threats to household pets in Florida. Their toxin (bufotoxin) is potent enough to kill a dog or cat within 15 minutes if a significant amount is absorbed. Even a small dog licking a toad can experience severe symptoms. This is a genuine emergency, not an overstatement.
Cane toads are significantly larger (4–9 inches), have dry, warty brown skin, and — most importantly — large triangular glands behind their eyes (parotoid glands) that are very prominent. Native Southern Toads are smaller and have parallel ridges on top of their head instead. When in doubt, don't let your pet approach it and call us.
Immediately rinse your pet's mouth with clean water for 10 minutes, wiping forward with a wet cloth to remove toxin — do NOT let them swallow the water. Then call your veterinarian or emergency animal hospital right away. Time is critical — do not wait to see if symptoms develop.
Our primary method is hands-on physical removal, which is the most effective and safest approach for your family and pets. We do not use poisons or indiscriminate chemical treatments. Some targeted products may be recommended in specific situations, which we will always discuss with you in advance.
Pricing depends on your property size, toad population, and the type of service selected. We offer free quotes with no obligation. Call 239-539-2228 or fill out our contact form and we'll provide a clear, upfront estimate before any work begins.
During Florida's wet season (June–October), cane toad activity spikes dramatically. We recommend monthly or bi-weekly visits during peak season. Year-round maintenance plans are also available for homes near water, conservation areas, or with persistent toad activity.
Yes. Toad Pros operates under Nuisance Wildlife Removal Inc. and holds all required Florida nuisance wildlife trapper licenses. We are fully insured. You can trust that you're working with trained, credentialed professionals — not an unlicensed handyman service.
